What is the Geocoding API?

The geocoding api api is the underlying technology that powers location services such as maps and search. It enables developers to convert an address into coordinates displayed on a map. The API is typically accessed through a web browser and requires an account with the service provider.

The API can be used to geocode either forward or reverse addresses using a variety of input parameters. The API also offers the ability to run batch geocoding requests. The batch geocoding API is a bit more complex than the single forward or reverse geocoding API, but can be more efficient when dealing with a large number of addresses.

When running a batch geocoding API request the user must specify the country code in order to use the correct address database. There is also a limit on the number of queries that can be submitted at one time. If the limit is exceeded the server will reject the query with an HTTP 429 response. To prevent this from happening to your application it is recommended to throttle the number of geocoding requests. This can be done by adding a short cool down period or a delay between each request.

The results of a geocoding request are returned as an array of GeoJSON features. The result includes the formatted address if one was found, the latitude and longitude of the location as well as an indication of whether or not a place name was found. The response also contains an array of address components if the address was reverse geocoded, and an indication of what type each address component is.
